In line with the conference theme, “Jungian Psychology and children”, the pre-congress was entitled “What are children like? A discussion between Shuntaro Tanikawa and Hayao Kawai.”
Tanikawa shared with the audience his memories of Hayao Kawai and the impact he had on his poetry, occasionally reciting his poems.
He learned that there is such a thing as “unconsciousness” from Hayao Kawai and it had a big impact on his poetry writing. Prof. Toshio Kawai speculated that keeping the right amount of space between the two might have been key to developing their friendship.
Participants were able to ask questions during the last half of the event. Shuntaro Tanikawa answered questions sincerely and with a sense of humor. Due to the capacity of the room, only 300 people were able to attend the event, with many people having to be turned away.
