Prof. Hiroi Gives a Keynote Lecture at the 6th Japan-France Local Government Exchange Conference in Kumamoto

Prof. Yoshinori Hiroi gave a keynote lecture at the 6th Japan-France Local Government Exchange Conference in Kumamoto on October 10th, 2018.



The Japan-France Local Government Exchange Conference is held every two years, with the location alternating between Japan and France. Its aim is to contribute to the development of the local governments of both countries. At the conference, administrative issues and advanced policies are presented and discussed. The first conference was held in Nancy in 2008 to commemorate the 150th anniversary of the Japan-France exchange. This year’s conference (the sixth) marks the 160th anniversary of the Japan-France exchange, and a total of 54 local governments participated (25 from Japan, 19 from France).

The theme of this year’s conference was “Urban attractiveness and the improvement of the values in mature societies: Visions and methods for sustainable community building that do not rely on increased population or economic scales.”. Prof. Hiroi gave a keynote lecture entitled “Urban visions in mature and aging societies” during the general meeting. Following the general meeting, the conference was divided into three groups for presentations and discussion. On the last day, a joint declaration (The Kumamoto Declaration) was presented for the future development of the Japan-France Local Government.
