An article by Professor Yoshinori Hiroi, entitled ‘A Depopulating Society is “Hope”’, appeared in the Opinion section KORON of the Yomiuri Shimbun (Morning edition, December 14, 2019).

He sees the transition into a depopulating society as a turning point away from the conventional social structure, which is dominated by “expansion and growth.” In such a situation, we Japanese should shift our social systems and corporate behavior towards individual happiness and sustainability. At the same time, he argues for the creation of urban and regional structures that can constitute “multipolar concentration” – rather than “unipolar concentration” or “multipolar dispersion” – and new models for the depopulating society.
