The final volume of Prof. Kawai’s essay series in Minerva Correspondence: Kiwameru was published

A new and final installment in Prof. Toshio Kawai’s essay series, “Kokoro’s Forefront and the Layers of History” was published in the December 2019 issue of Minerva Correspondence: Kiwameru.

The theme of this final essay was “individual kokoro and kokoro as a solution to problems.”

In the previous essays, he discussed the general state of kokoro today, such as kokoro’s current frontline or how layers of kokoro’s history remain in individuals.

In the final installment of the series, Prof. Kawai discusses how, while the kokoro of individuals living in a certain age proceeds collectively, there are variations in the state of kokoro. To what extent does one’s kokoro ride the tide? How can one preserve a layer of history in one’s kokoro? He also states that kokoro helps individuals find solutions to problems uniquely faced by them alone.

Our kokoro is constantly confronted with new matters in the changing environment that surrounds us, such as advances in medicine, science and technology, the weakening of traditional religions and communities, and the development of an internet-based society. Based on his practice in psychotherapy, Prof. Kawai considers the current frontline of kokoro and its problems. He concludes that it is important for individuals to identify and focus on their own issues rather than seeking general solutions and suggestions for psychological and mental problems of the age.
