An Article in which Program-Specific Assistant Professor Hiroyuki Muto Introduced Research Has Been Published in Cognitive Studies: Bulletin of the Japanese Cognitive Science Society

An article in which Program-Specific Assistant Professor Hiroyuki Muto introduced research has been published in the academic journal, Cognitive Studies: Bulletin of the Japanese Cognitive Science Society (Vol. 28, No. 1). The title is, “Introduction to studies demonstrating the usefulness of Bayesian statistical modeling in cognitive psychology: Understanding inter-individual and inter-trial variability.”

This article features recent papers on cognitive psychology that highlight the strengths of a technique called Bayesian statistical modeling. Cognitive psychology is a research field that attempts to understand the function of human mind by modeling the information processing systems behind observed behavior. In regard to the modeling methods, Bayesian statistical modeling, which makes it easier and more flexible to perform mathematical and statistical modeling, has gained a lot of attention in recent years.

The two papers presented in this article are notable because they focus on the variability of data, which is commonly treated as noise in traditional methods. These papers derive meaningful theoretical knowledge through the window of mathematical models, and demonstrate the potential for testing new hypotheses in cognitive psychology.
