An original article by Dr. Hisae Konakawa has been published in Volume 62 of the Journal Psychologia.

This article includes three quantitative studies that show a connection between the Japanese mentality and dream situations where “The dream-ego sees others” and “Others take the initiative in positive behavior to the dream-ego.” Study 1 compared Japanese and German clinical cases and Study 2 examined changes that occurred in both situations during psychotherapy in Japanese clinical cases. Then, Study 3 examined the rate of each dream situation in non-clinical Japanese college students by collecting their “impressive dreams in childhood” and “recent impressive dreams.”

The results of the three studies show that situations where “the dream-ego sees others” and “others take the initiative in positive behavior to the dream-ego” are characteristic of Japanese dreams. In addition, it is also suggested that these situations in dreams are also connected with Japanese mentality, psychological themes, and the process of establishing self.
