Book Authored by Professor Toshio Kawai for the Special Edition of NHK’s Hyappun De Meicho (“100 minutes on a famous book”), Entitled ‘Intensive Lectures: Hayao Kawai, Exploring the Depths of the Mind,’ Has Been Published

A book authored by Professor Toshio Kawai for the special edition of NHK’s Hyappun De Meicho (“100 minutes on a famous book”) entitled ‘Intensive Lectures: Hayao Kawai, Exploring the Depths of the Mind,’ has been published.

This book is a revised version of the past textbook for NHK E-TV’s program Hyappun De Meicho (“100 minutes on a famous book”), entitled  ‘Hayao Kawai Special: Exploring the Structure of Kokoro.’ The program was broadcasted in July 2018 and Prof. Toshio Kawai appeared as the guest speaker. In the special edition published recently, a new chapter, “The Way of Life Reflected by Dreams – ‘Myoe: Live the Dreams,’”has been added to the commentary on Prof. Hayao Kawai’s four books: ‘Introduction to Jungian Psychology,’ ‘Folktales and Japanese Kokoro,’ ‘Mythology and Japanese Kokoro,’ and ‘Jungian Psychology and Buddhism.’

In the new chapter, Prof. Hayao Kawai’s book ‘Myoe: Live the Dreams’ is discussed as an important work for understanding his philosophy and clinical practice. Based on his experiences in psychotherapy, Prof. Hayao Kawai reconsidered his own approach to psychotherapy in relation to Buddhism. According to Prof. Toshio Kawai, the trigger for such process was an encounter with Myoe, a Japanese Buddhist monk from the Kamakura Era, and his writing ‘Yume-ki (Dream Records)’.

In addition to describing a portrait of Myoe and his way of life, Prof. Toshio Kawai explains how Myoe deepened his faith by communicating with his kokoro through dreams, citing ‘Yume-ki’ and Prof. Hayao Kawai’s discussion on it. It is noted that Prof. Hayao Kawai considered Myoe’s dreams, focusing especially on the “female image” and “physicality.” Prof. Toshio Kawai states that such reflections are connected to the symbolism of dreams and dream analysis in Jungian psychotherapy and provide suggestions for us today as we consider our way of life.
