Ms. Mori Nakatani Receives the 2021 Young Scholar Award of the Shakespeare Society of Japan

Ms. Mori Nakatani (Program-Specific Research Fellow) received the 2021 Young Scholar Award of the Shakespeare Society of Japan for her paper entitled, “Inventing a Style of Language through Translation in Fukuda Tsuneari’s Hamlet” (vol. 7 [2021] pp. 41-54.).

The translation and performance of Hamlet by Tsuneari Fukuda (1955) has often been criticized as nothing more than an imitation of performance of Shakespeare’s plays in England. This paper, however, analyzes the process of Fukuda’s exploration and experiment in pursuit of a new style of Japanese dramatic language through the translation process. Based on these considerations, Ms. Nakatani concludes that Fukuda as a translator opened up two-way negotiations between Shakespeare’s English and modern Japanese by recognizing the formal differences between the two languages and presenting the possibility of translation as an experimental and creative field.
