This paper is open access.

This paper summarizes the results of research promoted by the research project entitled “The Richness of Kokoro and its Paradox: Change in Kokoro and their Ripple Effects in Psychotherapy.”

Psychotherapy where a therapist listens to what a client says is based on the theories of clinical and analytical psychology. However, there are not many studies that empirically examine how kokoro actually changes through the process of psychotherapy and which factors contribute to these changes.

After developing an index for analyzing the process of psychotherapy based on more than 100 cases, an additional 203 cases were evaluated. This study used the results of this evaluation to elucidate the changes in kokoro throughout psychotherapy. Then, the authors attempted to capture the essential changes in kokoro by extracting these in an abstract form while protecting clients’ privacy.

The paper introduces the following three results:
(1) It is important to recognize the beginning of a client’s narrative, as resistance may arise when a client tries to get into their own story
(2) negative movements that hinder the development of the narrative while at the same time move it forward are an important part of narrative in psychotherapy
(3) an individual’s narrative is uniquely one’s own, but easily influences and is influenced by the narratives of others.
