In many psychological traditions, emotions are defined as primarily emerging from within the individual, even if influenced by external factors (e.g., approval from other people). However, in some particular cultures, for example Japan, emotions are understood to have more interdependent characteristics that can be shared with other people and that arise from social contexts and collective, shared situations. This paper reconceptualizes emotion in terms of its interdependence, reviews the states and functions of interdependence of emotions, and discusses the implications for contemporary society.

The journal ‘Current Directions in Psychological Science’ includes in its publication criteria that articles should introduce the latest findings to researchers outside the field and be useful as course materials in psychology in English-speaking countries. The published papers are then expected to contribute to scholarly communication widely.
