Two Research Presentations by Senior Lecturer Yoshiyuki Ueda Received the Special Excellence Presentation Award at the 86th Annual Convention of the Japanese Psychological Association

Two research presentations by Senior Lecturer Yoshiyuki Ueda received the Special Excellence Presentation Award at the 86th annual convention of the Japanese Psychological Association, which was held from September 8 to 11, 2022.

The first was presented by Yoshiyuki Ueda (first author) in collaboration with Masataka Nakayama (Senior Lecturer, IFoHS), Nobuhito Abe (Associate Professor, IFoHS), Yukiko Uchida (Professor, IFoHS), and Jun Saiki (Professor, Graduate School of Human and Environmental Studies, Kyoto University). Their presentation title was “A Cross-Cultural Study on the Concept of ‘Kokoro’ – Toward the Development of a ‘Kokoro World Map’ .” The study recruited 2,878 participants from 41 countries and regions and used drawing tasks to examine how concepts such as ‘Kokoro,’ ‘spirit,’ and ‘soul’ are perceived in each region.

The second paper was presented by Yoshiyuki Ueda in collaboration with Michihiro Kaneko (first author) (PhD Student, Graduate School of Education, Kyoto University) and Michio Nomura (Associate Professor, Graduate School of Education, Kyoto University). Their presentation title was “Reward Response to Smile and Food After Social Exclusion–An fMRI Study.” It is known that when people feel alienated from their peers, they are attracted to the smiles of others and have an increased appetite and try to ingest food. In this study, they examined the mechanisms by which reward responses to smiles and food are formed, using fMRI, which measures brain activity.
