The 2019 Special Lecture Series, “Concepts of Kokoro for Medical, Welfare and Educational Specialists: A Learning Space for Caregiving Professionals”, was held.

The Special Lecture Series on “Concepts of Kokoro” is an educational project that was started at the KRC in 2013. It is held every year over several days, with the objective of “establishing a learning space for motivated people working in the caregiving fields of medicine, welfare and education.” Because the organizer, Prof. Sakiko Yoshikawa, will retire at the end of this academic year, this year’s lecture series will be the final one. The final theme is “Understanding Developmental Disabilities using Neuroscience, Occupational Therapy, and Clinical Psychology.” During her opening address, Prof. Yoshikawa explained the purpose of the Special Lecture Series on “Concepts of Kokoro” and looked back on the trajectory it had taken. Next, Prof. Toshio Inui (Department of Psychology, Otemon Gakuin University; Kokoro Research Center, Kyoto University) gave the first lecture, entitled “A New Way of Grasping Developmental Disabilities”. The second lecture was given by Prof. Toshihiro Kato (Human Health Sciences, Kyoto University), which was entitled “Thinking About Occupational Therapy for School Age Children Using the Concept of ‘Goodbye’”. The last lecture, entitled “The Age of Developmental Disabilities and Atypical Development”, was given by Dr. Chihiro Hatanaka (Kokoro Research Center, Kyoto University). After each lecture, an audience Q&A session was held.

During the general discussion session that took place after the three lectures, questions and comments from various perspectives were raised. They deepened the argument regarding the significance and importance of attempts to link basic scientific knowledge and clinical practice (occupational therapy and play therapy) for understanding developmental disabilities. Finally, Prof. Yoshikawa presented bouquets of flowers to two lecturers: Prof. Inui, who served as the chief lecturer for many years and Prof. Kato, who also served as a lecturer and introduced the speakers presenting practical reports every year.
