Abstract

Two pseudohomophone lexical decision experiments have been done to compare the processing of two different Korean orthographies: Hanja and Hangul. Subjects were Korean graduate students and their wives. In experiment 1, performance on the Hanja pseudohomophone was similar to the performance on the nonhomophonic nonword, indicating no phonological activation in Hanja. In experiment 2, the Hangul pseudohomophone was processed faster than the nonhomophonic nonword. The implications of these studies for education are discussed.
