An article by Professor Yukiko Uchida on “Culture of Kokoro – Thinking about Happiness and the Role of Art during the COVID-19 Pandemic” was published in the special issue, “Creating the Future: New Forms of Culture and Art” in the Magazine, CEL, published by the Research Institute for Culture, Energy and Life.

 

Culture is not only narrowly defined, but also broadly defined as daily social activities, which is mutually constructed with our psychological functions. The COVID-19 pandemic has shaken such a mutual constitutional system of culture and kokoro, as collective cultural activities and social interaction has been quite limited and suppressed under the pandemic.

 

At present, the “opportunity” and the “place” where we have social relationships with others are limited. Under these circumstances, where has our sense of well-being drifted?

 

From the perspective of psychology, we consider the social role that culture and art can play.
