Article Entitled “The Meaning of ‘Frightening and Strange’ Dreams,” Based on an Interview with Professor Toshio Kawai, Was Published in the Business Magazine PRESIDENT (July 30th Issue)

An article entitled “The Meaning of ‘Frightening and Strange’ Dreams,” based on an interview with Professor Toshio Kawai, was published in the business magazine PRESIDENT (July 30th issue, President Inc.). Prof. Kawai’s interview was included in the issue’s special feature article, “The Most Up-to-Date Research in the World! The Sleep Revolution.”

Based on his clinical practices of Jungian psychotherapy, Prof. Kawai explains possible meanings that certain dream contents may symbolize and how they may lead to a change of kokoro. He uses several examples such as “a dream with a snake,” “a dream where one’s teeth are falling out,” and “a dream where one is flying.” He also touches on the case of periodically recurring dreams whose contents are similar, or dreams that are based on real-life events, and offers a useful perspective on how such dreams can be a chance for a change of one’s kokoro.

Furthermore, in the latter half of the interview, Prof. Kawai discusses sandplay therapy, which is valued in psychotherapy as something that reflects one’s kokoro and changes it, similarly to dreams. First, he gives a specific description of sandplay therapy, explaining the importance of the movement of one’s kokoro and the experiences that occur in the person while creating their sandplay. Prof. Kawai also mentions that dreams and sandplay can be an opportunity for us to deepen our self-understanding and discover a new self.
