In two studies, we seek to document and understand the role of interpersonal emotion regulation (IER) in promoting culturally normative emotions—that is, those emotions that promote central cultural goals. In previous observational research in Belgium (University of Leuven) and Japan (collaboration with Prof. Yukiko Uchida, Kokoro Research Center), we found that romantic partners gravitate towards culturally valued emotional attractor states during interactions. These attractors were, among others, strength and annoyance in Belgium and empathy and embarrassment in Japan (Boiger, Kirchner, Uchida, & Mesquita, 2018). The data have already been collected, and funding is requested for in-depth coding and analysis of the behavioral data.
